Taking care with breathwork
Breath practices (exercises and pranayama) literally change the internal chemical balance of the blood that supplies every single cell in your body. By altering breath rate, depth, retention, or ratios we alter the concentration of carbon dioxide, and as a consequence the pH levels of the blood - within minutes of practice.
With this much potential for change in physiology - its really important to work with someone who knows what they’re doing - to you!
The internet and social media are full of self-proclaimed breath coaches and practitioners and it seems like everyone is an expert. Yes breathing is pretty simple - we do it all day every day, and even wen we sleep! But it’s also incredibly complex, with the potential to help, and harm.
If a 'coach', 'teacher', 'physio', or other health professional is to safely assess, plan and guide someone with breath practice they need to be experienced in:
+ the physiology of breath
+ the mechanical dynamics of breathing
+ structural assessment & feedback
+ therapeutic bodywork
+ the implications of certain pathologies (like asthma or diabetes)
+ the effects of breath practice on dosha balance
